Open Water Scuba Diver

This comprehensive certification program provides education on all essential aspects of scuba diving, including dive planning, equipment usage, dive skills, and the underwater environment. Classroom and in-water sessions are part of the course. Upon completion, individuals receive an Open Water Scuba Diver certification which enables them to dive worldwide with a partner, at a maximum depth of 60 feet. The course sets the stage for future diving experiences.

The rental of your life support equipment is included in the price. However, you must provide your own Scuba appropriate mask, snorkel, fins, and boots. We offer discounts and equipment benefits to students who purchase personal gear with us. Please be sure to stop by the dive shop prior to your class date to shop for your personal equipment. Your logbook is included in the cost of the course.

Open water season to finalize your certification in Ohio runs May through October. During the months of November through April, you can join us for a trip to a tropical destination or we can provide a referral for you to complete your certification on your own trip.

Course prerequisites

  • Minimum age to enroll is 10 years old
  • You must provide your own mask, snorkel, fins, and boots
  • If you are under the age of 18, you must have a parent or guardian sign the emergency treatment consent form.


Participation in any scuba-related activity requires the completion of a medical form; Depending on your medical history, a physician must sign a form stating that you are physically sound to practice scuba. This must be done prior to any pool work. Upon registering with SDI, you will be asked to fill out an additional medical form. You also are required to fill out a liability release

The academic portion:

  • Academics are online self study done at the students chosen pace.
  • Instructors review all missed questions from the online training in the classroom.
  • It typically takes about 10-12 hours to complete.

Confined Water

  • 10-minute float
  • 200-yard swim. There is no time limit, any stroke can be used, but swimming must be continued without touching the bottom of the pool or stopping
  • The aquatic environment: vision, light, sound, heat loss, tides, currents, waves, surge, etc.
  • Physics and physiology: buoyancy, pressure, air spaces, breathing compressed air, mixed gases, etc.
  • Dive equipment selection, assembly, use and maintenance
  • Dive planning
  • Basic scuba skills including mask and regulator skills, swimming underwater, buoyancy control, basic rescue techniques, and emergency procedures

Open Water

  • Review a subset of skills learned in the Confined Water class
  • Get practical dive experience under the supervision of a dive professional
  • 4 dives conducted over 2 days

We offer three options for scheduling the confined water classes.

Weeknight scuba: These sessions run from 1 through 4 in order. Each session lasts from 6 p.m. to approximately 10 p.m.

Weekend scuba: One weekend per month, we offer a more accelerated class. This option only has two sessions, Saturday and Sunday. These sessions are typically 8 hours each day. Anyone under the age of 14 yrs. old cannot participate in group weekend scuba classes.

4 week class: One session per week for 4 weeks. Our most affordable option for the open water certification.

Private classes: If none of the other options work with your schedule, we offer students the flexibility to plan around their schedule.

Open Water Dives

Four dives are required on two different calendar days. From June to September, these dives can be completed at Gilboa Quarry. Students who complete the necessary coursework, but are unable to complete their open water dives by the end of the season can complete their dives in June of the following year. Otherwise, they can be completed on one of our many trips or by referral at a location of your choosing.

Open water certification dives take place on Saturday and Sundays from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Both days are required.

We also offer the option to schedule private certification dives.


  • Academic material
  • Rental of BCD, regulators, dive computer, wetsuit, tanks, and weights
  • Classroom & Pool sessions with certified dive instructors to review academic material and refine scuba skills
  • Global referral paperwork for students completing certification dives elsewhere
